The High Performance Leadership Program: Steps to a Successful Journey
with Deb Nowak
The High Performance Leadership (HPL) Program – What is it? What are the
benefits? Why do you need it? Join us to receive answers to these questions
– and more!
The HPL is about developing and improving your leadership skills – vital
skills critical to Toastmasters and the world at-large – skills that we
need on a daily basis. The process of working through an HPL will aid in developing
those crucial skills, and is a journey to be embraced, not feared or delayed.
While the HPL is a requirement to achieve the Advanced Leader Silver (ALS),
a step towards becoming a Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM), there are benefits
to completing an HPL, even if you choose not to pursue advanced leadership awards.
Please join us in this program as we explore the HPL – what it is, why
you need it, and the benefits of completing an HPL program. We’ll discuss
the HPL process, choosing your Guidance Committee members, why there’s
no need to delay working on your HPL project, and generate ideas for HPL programs.
And to further enlighten you, we will also listen to several Toastmasters in
varying degrees of completion of their HPL’s share their HPL programs,
something normally done only at the club level.

BYTE ME!: Why Leaders Need to Hear it More Often from Customers
with Dan Bell
How often have you said (or wish you had said) these two words to someone who has just given you poor customer service? It’s happening ever more frequently these days. Why? It all starts at the top.
Effective leadership is the result of Listening to customers, Empathisizing with their wants or needs, Addressing these wants or needs with solutions, and Discovering better ways to satisfy customers’ desires. Customers include everyone in the service chain; from upper management through to the final consumer. All organizations require excellent customer service to survive long term. Leaders need to understand this concept and practice it daily in their direct communications with employees, volunteers, and customers. How can we practice these concepts within our Toastmasters clubs to best serve our customers?
In this session, basic concepts of leadership and customer service are intertwined in an upbeat, fun learning environment that will answer this question. Audience participation and personal anecdotes are a must!
Dan Bell
Dan Bell has over twenty years’ experience in the retail management industry.
He has worked for two of Canada’s largest retailers, Zellers and Loblaws.
He started in the stockroom out of university and learned the importance of
merchandise delivery. On the sales floor of several Zellers stores in Halifax,
he learned there was only one thing customers wanted once they got in…to
leave a satisfied customer…whether they bought a new TV or just socks
and underwear. He noticed that leaders who practice excellent customer service
techniques in their daily lives get better results and more productivity from
the team around them.
As a Toastmaster over the past 10 years, Dan has served as a club officer eight times (four as President), as Area Governor, and most recently as District Governor. He has been an avid speech competitor and truly believes in the success of the Toastmasters program.

Essentials of Effective Group Dynamics
with Bash Turay
This session will provide participants with basic tools for identifying and changing behavior within groups. Participants will learn what to look for in a group, such as your club, and apply that knowledge to their particular group using the eight group dynamics process points. Understanding group dynamics will be of benefit to participants, not only as current or potential leaders, but in other aspects of their business and personal lives as well. As much as is practical, participants will incorporate experiential group activities to enhance their understanding of the concepts, and practice applying them to a group.

Judge’s Workshop
with Wendy Harding
Successful contests depend as much on qualified judges as on talented speakers. We don’t expect speakers to participate in contests without preparation and we shouldn’t expect judges to either.
This condensed version of Toastmasters’ official Speech Contest Training Program teaches participants the basics of how to judge speech contests including the challenges, the ethics, the rules and the standards. Attendance is mandatory for all judges for the Table Topics and International Speech contests (unless you participated in any of the last three workshops). Open to all interested attendees. 90 minutes.
Wendy Harding, DTM
Wendy Harding was born and raised in Fredericton. She has worked for the Dr
Everett Chalmers Hospital, subsequently River Valley Health for 29 years where
she holds the position of Clerical Supervisor in Diagnostic Imaging.
Wendy joined her first Toastmaster club in the fall of 1995, now belongs to four clubs. She attained her Distinguished Toastmaster Designation in July 2003 and again in April 2007.
Wendy has held several offices at the club, area and district level. She served as District 45 Treasurer in 2002-03, District Assistant Treasurer in 2003-2004 and Area 13 Governor in 2004-2005. Wendy co-chaired the District Division Study Committee in 2002-2003. Wendy was honored to be named District 45 Toastmaster of the Year 2002-2003 and District 45 Area Governor of the Year for 2004-2005.
